Game Description
Mercatoria is a turn-based grand strategy game set in an age of exploration and commerce. You lead a nation from humble beginnings — a capital city, a handful of workers, and raw land — toward economic dominance and military supremacy. Every decision matters: where you build roads, which resources you develop, how you feed your population, and when you go to war.
Build Your Transport Network
At the heart of Mercatoria is logistics. Raw materials only have value if you can move them. Hire Engineers to lay roads across your territory, connecting farms, mines and forests to your capital. A well-planned transport network is the difference between a thriving empire and a nation that starves. Plan every route carefully — roads cost resources to build, and a broken supply chain can cripple your economy overnight.
Develop Your Land
Your territory is filled with untapped potential. Send Explorers into hills, swamps and mountains to discover hidden mineral deposits — iron ore, copper, tin and coal. Once found, deploy Builders to upgrade resource hexes from rough terrain into productive mines and farms. Each upgrade increases output, but costs lumber and iron. Prioritize wisely: food to feed your workers, timber and iron ore to fuel your industry.
Manage Production
Raw materials alone don't build empires. Convert Timber into Lumber, Iron Ore into Iron, Wool into Fabric — and combine them into Bronze, Paper and more. Your production runs on labor: hire workers and assign them to manufacturing batches each turn. Balance your workforce carefully. Too little food and your workers go unfed. Too little iron and your army goes unequipped.
Grow Your Workforce
Your citizens are your most valuable resource. Hire workers with Fabric, and spend Paper to recruit specialized citizens — Explorers who chart unknown territories, Engineers who build roads and fortifications, and Builders who upgrade your land. Each citizen has a role, and a well-staffed nation grows exponentially faster than one that relies on raw land alone.
Raise Armies and Fleets
When diplomacy fails, steel decides. Recruit Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery using Iron and Bronze. Build Sloops, Frigates and Men-of-War to project power across the seas. Your military eats into your food supply every turn — so a large army is both a strength and a burden. Time your campaigns carefully and make sure your supply chain can sustain your war effort.
Trade on the World Market
No nation is self-sufficient. Buy what you lack and sell your surplus on the World Market — prices fluctuate based on supply and demand, so timing matters. Sea trade requires ships with cargo holds, adding a logistical layer to your commercial ambitions.
Diplomacy or War
Six major nations compete for the same continent. Declare war on weaker neighbors to seize their territory, or bide your time and let them exhaust themselves. Passive native peoples occupy parts of the map and will resist expansion. Every nation runs on the same economic engine as you — watch your rivals grow and adapt your strategy accordingly.
